Finding Peace on a Mexican Beach
Slow down. Be present. Notice.
Friday, September 4, 2026.
I can’t believe it’s already Friday. Vacation has gone by quickly. This morning I am sitting in a beach chair in a shady spot. I can hear the soft lapping of the ocean waves. In the background, the driving beat of pop music, children laughing at play, and adults chatting.
There are hard-working men on the beach, raking and shoveling into wheelbarrows the endless sargassum that threatens to take over the beaches. The warm breeze is blowing the stench from the decaying weed down-wind. The shade makes the outdoor temperature tolerable.
It is not especially beautiful at this particular spot. The man-made Geotube dams intended to deter the sargassum are covered with algae and grime. However, in the distance, the ocean is deep blue, the sky is a shade lighter, with soft white cumulus clouds drifting to consume the far away cirrus clouds.
The day is extraordinary. To be present here and now is a gift, a balm to my nervous system that is still sore from grief and stressed from the external demands of life. In this moment I choose to be here, fully alive, experiencing the sensations of this Mexican resort beach. My emotions in this moment are contentment, feeling at peace, and grateful. My body feels at ease - finally - after five days - and I consider how I might bring this state of being present with myself back to the states and into the day-to-day of real life.
Here and now there is no rush. I don’t even have my watch with me. The rhythm is eat when I’m hungry. Sleep when I’m tired. Wake when my body wakes.
Slow down.
Be present.
Notice.
Nothing is an emergency.
Contentedly,
-Cheryl
