At Moore Life Counseling & Coaching, we offer our counseling services in Iowa, where healing begins through a person-centered approach and an attachment perspective. Our licensed counselor, Cheryl, offers a holistic view of mental well-being, recognizing the intricate interplay of emotions, relationships, and personal history.


An attachment perspective is used to help individuals and couples see how relationships, both past and present, affect the person in the current time. EMDR therapy is used to help with recovery from traumatic events and life circumstances with an aim to build adaptive functioning and provide tools useful in everyday life. She is a reef aquarium hobbyist with a saltwater aquarium in her office to facilitate a soothing environment for clients. Chery is also trained as Gottman Leader for the Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.


Cheryl is a graduate of Liberty University’s Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, currently working under a supervised license, t-LMHC. She is also credentialled as a National Certified Counselor. Cheryl earned her Bachelor’s degree in Human Services at Buena Vista University and completed the Practical Nursing program at Indian Hills Community College. She is a reef aquarium hobbyist with a saltwater aquarium in her office to facilitate a soothing environment for clients.

Cheryl works with adults aged 18+, offering individual and couple’s therapies with a holistic view and treatment plans aimed towards health in every facet of life. Attachment theory is integrated into therapy to help individuals and couples see how relationships, both past and present, affect the person in the current time.


Attachment Theory and Internal Family Systems informed therapy are used along with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR) to help you recover from traumatic events and life circumstances. Cheryl will help you in your journey to build a secure sense of self, strengthen your inner resources, and explore healthy ways of living in relationship to yourself and with others.

Cheryl has completed Levels 1 and 2 training of The Gottman Method for couples counseling. https://www.gottman.com/ In couples therapy with Cheryl, you will learn the importance of building a Sound Relationship House to become masters of long-term relationship or marriage, focusing on a “good enough” marriage with increased connection, communication, and skills for conflict resolution as the goal. Couple’s sessions can be provided in the typical 50 minute session, 90-minute timeframes or longer, intensive sessions. Cheryl facilitates educational classes for marital relationships along with her husband as a certified Gottman Leaders for “The 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work”. They are available for presenting workshops at Family Legacy Counseling, online, in the community, or at your local church. The husband-and-wife duo have a deep desire to provide education, resources, and encouragement for relational health. Their passion for helping other couples has been born out of personal journeys of healing.

Cheryl spent 16 years as a stay-at-home mom, homeschooling her 4 children, and homesteading on a small acreage in rural southern Iowa before beginning her educational journey. She then worked for several years as a nurse and in the outpatient mental health clinic at the VA Hospital in Knoxville then Des Moines, IA. She worked in community mental health settings and targeted case management within Medicaid systems for 10 years. Cheryl has been providing counseling services at Family Legacy Counseling since 2021.

Cheryl was involved in Children’s Ministry in church settings since her youth. She has a passion for music and has enjoyed being a member of the worship team at her local church.

Cheryl lived in rural areas her most of her life. She abides by the midwestern values of hard work, family, and faith. She and her husband currently reside in West Des Moines. She enjoys working out, hiking, bicycling, cooking healthy meals, and spending time with her grown children and grandchildren.
